I'm Susan Mackay, The Neurodiversity Coach and Founder of Create Connection. As an ICF and PAAC Certified Professional ADHD coach, I understand the value of tailoring my coaching approach to unique and individual needs.
I'm passionate about helping to create an inclusive world where differences are celebrated, where everyone can reach their full potential.
I was twenty years into a successful professional career before anyone—including me—discovered my ADHD. Although the diagnosis initially shook my world, it ultimately became the gift that led me to coaching.
Late diagnosis of neurodivergent conditions in adults is on the rise. While these conditions present challenges, they need not be barriers. There is growing recognition that the human mind is far more diverse than is considered to be 'the norm' in our schools, workplaces, and communities. As a result not everyone is able to thrive or reach their full potential within traditional spaces.
Today, individuals with unique minds are leaders in every profession. They run some of the world's most successful companies whilst others excel in academia, sports, media, and the creative arts.
Far from being a 'deficit' or 'disorder,' success in a series of dynamic roles with the BBC, the UN, and other international organisations was due to my unique brain wiring. It fuelled my curiosity, helped me navigate some extraordinary situations, and made it possible for me to contribute in unique and creative ways.
The skill I am most proud of developing, however, is coaching. This role has not only deepened my appreciation of the unique potential within each individual, but is opening up meaningful opportunities to help others thrive.
After graduating from Scotland's Music Conservatoire, I joined the BBC in London to train as a Studio Manager before returning home to BBC Scotland, and working my way up to become a Radio and TV Producer.
Eager for adventure, I applied to manage an overseas project and became the first BBC Producer to be sent to outer Mongolia. In Ulaan Baatar, I led a groundbreaking UNESCO-funded radio project that helped young people secure jobs and gain confidence to start their own businesses.
That led into managing a series of health-related media projects in Nepal, Tanzania, and Ghana, before joining the World Health Organization in Geneva. There, I was tasked with designing a global behavior change strategy to promote safe injection practices. Over the next twenty years, I worked with a succession of international organizations, catalyzing social and behavioral change in more than 30 countries.
After the pandemic revealed my 'thinking difference',' I took time out to develop my coaching skills at IDC's intensive Summer University in Provence. While working towards my Professional Coaching Diploma and ICF certification, I took specialized ADHD Coach training at the highly-acclaimed, ICF-Accredited ADD Coaching Academy (ADDCA).
Currently engaged in ADDCA's unique Fundamentals of ADHD Coaching program for families, I now help children, teenagers and their families navigate ADHD and other forms of neurodiversity, as well as working with a wide range of young people and professionals.
With over two decades of experience in social and behavioral change, I infuse my coaching with a passion for participatory facilitation methods, including the 'hands-on' LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method and inclusive, universal and human-centered design.
